Japan’s biggest cosplay weekend of the year lands on Halloween itself in 2026. From Friday 30 October to Sunday 1 November, Tokyo’s Ikebukuro turns into one giant costume district for the Ikebukuro Halloween Cosplay Festival, and the Cosplayer of the Year overall title is decided on its stage on the Saturday. Four hours west by shinkansen, Pop Culture Hiroshima runs on 31 October and 1 November with free entry and a cosplay parade down the Hondori shopping arcade. Here is what each event involves, what it costs, and the rules that catch first-timers out.

Ikebukuro Halloween Cosplay Festival 2026 (IKEHALO)
IKEHALO is the one Japanese cosplay event that takes over an entire neighborhood instead of a convention hall. It is run by an executive committee that includes Dwango, Animate, Hacosta, Sunshine City and Toshima Ward, and the 2025 edition drew around 161,000 people across three days. This year is the first time in five years that the festival includes 31 October itself, so expect it to be busier than usual.
Schedule
- Friday 30 October – IKEHALO Night, 16:30-22:30. An evening session at Sunshine City built around night photography. Strictly 18+, ID required.
- Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November – 10:00-18:00. The main festival, spread across the Ikebukuro east exit area. The main stage is in Naka-Ikebukuro Park, and the parade (around 400 cosplayers) runs along a stretch of Ikebukuro’s main street that is turned into a temporary pedestrian zone.
Tickets and prices
You need a registration ticket to cosplay or to shoot with a camera – cosplayers and photographers buy different registrations. Tickets are sold only through the official site (via e+), and advance sales close at 23:59 JST the day before each event day. Official per-day prices:
| Ticket | Advance | Same day |
|---|---|---|
| Standard (Sat or Sun) | 2,980 yen | 3,480 yen |
| Premium (Sat or Sun) | 3,980 yen | 4,480 yen |
| IKEHALO Night (Fri 30 Oct) | 3,480 yen | 3,980 yen |
A processing fee is added at checkout, and popular days can sell out before the advance window closes. Premium holders get access to a hospitality area for makeup touch-ups. There is also a paid memorial photo session at 8,000 yen per group, booked separately.
Special guests
Enako, one of Japan’s best-known cosplayers, returns as a special guest on Saturday 31 October – her first IKEHALO appearance in seven years. Toshiya Miyata is also listed as a guest. Stage times are posted on the official site closer to the day.
The Cosplayer of the Year 2026 final
Cosplayer of the Year (COTY) is a season-long contest that has been running since August: an open first round on X, a second round on the Claps! platform, then a Niconico Live judging round in late September and early October that picked a Grand Prix winner in each division. Those division winners now meet on the IKEHALO stage on Saturday 31 October for the awards ceremony and the overall Grand Prix decision.
The format is simple: each finalist gets up to two minutes of free-form self-presentation, five judges score visuals and presentation, and the Niconico audience vote is folded into the result. The ceremony streams free on Niconico Live, so you can follow it even if you are not in Tokyo. The organizers have not published a start time yet, so check coty.tokyo on the morning.
Rules that matter
- Change on site only. Cosplayers check in at reception and change in the official changing rooms. Arriving already in costume from home or a hotel is not allowed. A cloakroom next to the changing rooms takes large bags (no valuables).
- Ask before you shoot. Get a cosplayer’s permission before photographing them, including phone shots for social media. Photos are for personal, non-commercial use only.
- Coverage guidelines apply. It is a public street event with a lot of families, so the organizers enforce skin-exposure rules. Read them before you pack.
- No alcohol, and you can be refused entry if you show up drunk.
- Not every shop welcomes costumes. The official area map marks where cosplay is and is not allowed.
- Touch-ups stay in the changing rooms (or the hospitality area for Premium holders) – not in station toilets or on the street.
Pop Culture Hiroshima 2026
If Tokyo crowds are not your thing, Hiroshima’s festival is the relaxed alternative on the same weekend. Entry to the main hall is free, cosplay is welcome, and you do not need to register at all unless you want a changing room.
Schedule and venue
- Dates: Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November.
- Hall: NTT Credo Hall, 11th floor of Motomachi Credo Pacela (6-78 Motomachi, Naka-ku). Hall program runs 13:00-17:00 both days.
- Stage highlights: an anime-song live set and a performance by the Aki Hiroshima Bushotai samurai troupe on Saturday, a “Hiroshima Anison King” karaoke contest on Sunday, and a group photoshoot with local cosplayers to close the event on 1 November. International cosplayers join the stage on both days.
The Hondori Cosplay Parade (Saturday 31 October)
- Gather in costume at Fukuromachi Park by 11:45.
- Step off at 12:00 and walk the Hondori shopping arcade. The parade ends around 12:30 where the Hiroden tram line crosses Hondori; from there you make your own way to NTT Credo Hall.
- Cost: free, no sign-up needed. It runs rain or shine, and the organizers may close the line early if turnout is very high, so arrive early.
- Visitors from abroad can volunteer to carry the parade placards – meet at 11:30, no booking, first come until the spots are filled.
Changing rooms and costs
The only real cost is the changing room: 2,000 yen per day plus fees, at the Hiroshima Prefectural Culture Center (a separate building from the hall), open 10:00-18:00 with bag storage. It is advance e-ticket only, with no same-day sales. If you are staying nearby, you can arrive at the parade already dressed. There is also a free mixed touch-up room inside the hall for quick wig and prop fixes, roughly 12:00-17:00 – no full changes there.
Hiroshima rules to know
- No changing, wig work or makeup in public toilets or on the street. On trams and buses, cover up with a coat or hat.
- Props: staffs no taller than you, Japanese swords kept sheathed, and realistic weapons carried in a bag or box.
- Parade costumes must not be revealing – skirts need shorts or leggings underneath, deep necklines need an inner layer.
- Banned outright: bosozoku-style biker uniforms (a city ordinance), realistic modern military gear, and police, fire or security uniforms unless they are obviously cosplay.
- Some parts of Credo Pacela – the 6th-floor Sky Patio and Wing Plaza, the 9th-floor balcony and the 7th-9th floor Skywalk – are not photo areas, even though walking through in costume is fine.
- Bystanders may photograph you during the gathering and parade without asking.
Which One Should You Pick?
Go to Ikebukuro if you want scale, big-name guests, the COTY final and a full Tokyo weekend – and you are happy to pay for registration and follow a tight rulebook. Go to Hiroshima if you want a free, friendlier event with a proper parade and no ticket stress. If you are 18+ and in Tokyo on Friday night, IKEHALO Night is the most photogenic session of the whole weekend.
